
No. 1 USC Men's Volleyball Defeats Crosstown Rival UCLA

Murphy Troy had 18 kills and 7 digs as the No. 1-ranked USC men's volleyball team opened Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with a 30-26, 29-31, 30-26, 30-28 win at No. 10 UCLA on Wednesday (Jan. 13).
USC improved to 3-1 overall, while the Bruins fell to 1-3. It was the Trojans' fourth victory over their crosstown rival in the past 5 meetings and fifth in the last 7. It also gave USC 2.5 points in the Crosstown Gauntlet standings (UCLA now leads this year's all-sport competition between the schools, 20-17.5.
USC outhit the Bruins, .275 to .213, and had more blocks (18 to 8.5), but UCLA had more aces (9 to 4) and digs (52 to 44).
Tri Bourne added 14 kills, 8 blocks and 7 digs for USC, Tony Ciarelli also had 14 kills along with 6 digs, Hunter Current had a match-best 9 blocks with 2 aces, Austin Zahn had 7 kills, 6 blocks and 2 aces, Andrew Pizula had 13 digs and Riley McKibbin had 10 digs and 5 blocks.
For UCLA, Jack Polales had 25 kills and Garrett Muagututia added 21 kills and 15 digs.
USC next plays at No. 3 UC Irvine in a 7 p.m. MPSF contest on Friday (Jan.15) that will be a rematch of the 2009 NCAA Championship match.
