Five USC men's volleyball players had busy summers representing the United States in various international competitions.
Junior middle blocker Austin Zahn helped the U.S. Men's National A2 team win a gold medal at the 2009 NORCECA Pan Am Cup in Chiapas, Mexico, in June. The tourney also featured teams from Canada, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama and Puerto Rico.
A trio of Trojan outside hitters--juniors Murphy Troy and Tri Bourne and sophomore Tony Ciarelli--were on the U.S. Men's Junior National Team that placed eighth at the 2009 FIVB World Championship in Pune, India, in August. USC has more players on the U.S. team than any other school.
Troy and Bourne were on the 2008 U.S. Men's Junior National Team that won a bronze medal at the NORCECA Men's Junior Continental Championship in San Salvador, El Salvador, which qualified the team for the 2009 FIVB World Championship.
Earlier this month, soph setter Jeff Carlson teamed with UC Irvine's Will Montgomery at the 2009 FIVB Junior (U-21) Beach World Championship in Blackpool, England. The pair advanced to the second round of qualifying.
It was the second appearance for Carlson at a FIVB Beach World Championship. He and Ciarelli won a silver medal at the 2008 FIVB Youth Under-19 Beach World Championship in the Netherlands.
