USC Ready To Hit The Beach...In Riverside

LOS ANGELES -- The USC women's volleyball team will compete at the 2009 Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship this Saturday (April 18) in downtown Riverside. The event is sponsored by CBS College Sports, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and AVP Pro Beach Volleyball in conjunction with the AVP Crocs Tour Riverside Open.

The Championship is part of the fourth annual Alt Games, a first-of-its-kind event showcasing college action sports championships.

The Championship features a team-style format with each school fielding four teams of two players. Joining USC in the competition will be Nebraska, Texas, Hawai'i, Utah, San Diego, North Carolina and UC Riverside.

Extensive television coverage of the event will kick off with a special one-hour program airing on CBS Sports on Saturday (May 16) at 11 a.m. Pacific.

The Championship will adhere strictly to NCAA guidelines for participation.

"The Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship has been at the forefront of the movement to add Sand Volleyball as an NCAA sport," said Kathy DeBoer, Executive Director, AVCA. "We anticipate the NCAA adding it to the Emerging Sports list for women next month, which would pave the way for colleges and universities to sponsor it as a varsity sport beginning with the 2010-2011 academic year."
