Sophomore Matt Giles fired a 5-under 67 to claim a share of the lead and pace the No. 2 USC men's golf team during the first round of the 2009 Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship on Friday (March 13) at the Southern Highlands G.C. in Las Vegas, Nev.
USC, still playing without injured two-time All-American Jamie Lovemark (broken finger), combined for a 7-over 295 and is 12 behind first-place Clemson (283). Host UNLV is third (285) while Arizona is third (287).
Giles is tied for first after his team-best sixth round in the 60s this season. Giles' 67 included a stretch of five birdies in six holes on the front 9. He shares the round-one lead with three other players. The Australian is after his first win of the season and sixth top 7 finish in as many events.
Freshman Steve Lim is tied for 23rd at 2-over 74. He was 3-under on the front 9, but lost momentum on the back 9, settling above par. Senior Tom Glissmeyer is tied for 40th at 4-over 76. He had seven birdies during the round but also had his share of struggles in an inconsistent day.
Sophomore Tim Sluiter is tied for 58th at 6-over 78 and senior Gavin Reid is tied for 63rd at 7-over 79.
The event continues Saturday and Sunday.
