Los Angeles - Sophomore guard Rodrick Stewart has asked for and been granted a release from his scholarship with USC basketball, Trojan coach Henry Bibby announced today.
"You always want people to be happy, and Rodrick and his family made a good family decision," said Bibby of the 6-4 point guard. "Rodrick is a good kid who has worked hard for the program. But this will put him in a situation where he and his brother can grow independently."
Stewart--and his identical twin Lodrick-- came to USC last year from Rainier Beach High in Seattle. Rodrick averaged 4.4 points and 2.2 rebounds for the Trojans in 2004 while starting 17 of 27 games as a first-year freshman point guard.
Lodrick, a 6-4 shooting guard who averaged nearly 9 points per game as a freshman, will remain with the USC program.
The Trojans open exhibition play tonight against Occidental at the Lyon Center at 7 p.m.
