Baseball Shuts Down California With 9-1 Win

LOS ANGELES - Junior Anthony Reyes and freshman Brett Bannister combined to allow only one run Friday and the USC Trojans defeated the California Golden Bears, 9-1, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field.
Bannister (2-2) pitched five innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Reyes made his third limited start of the season, throwing four scoreless innings (3 H, 4 BB, 3 SO). He stranded eight California runners.
USC improves to 14-13 overall (2-0 in Pac-10 play) while California falls to 19-13 on the season (3-2 in Pac-10 play).
The Trojans scored three runs in the first. Anthony Lunetta led off with a single to left center and scored when Brian Barre hit a double to center that California center fielder David Nicholson lost in the lights. Barre stole third and scored on a passed ball by catcher Chris Grossman. Senior first baseman Bill Peavey hit a solo shot to right, his fifth of the season, to complete the scoring.
Nick Mosich and Travis McAndrews hit RBI singles as part of a four-run fourth inning. Freshman designated hitter Joey Metropoulos went 3-for-4 for the Trojans, who collected 12 hits on the evening.
California first baseman Conor Jackson provided the lone run with his 11th homer of the season, a solo shot to left in the eighth off Bannister.
