Baseball Loses Second Game In As Many Days

MALIBU, Calif. - Greg Ramirez threw seven strong innings Wednesday and the No. 10 Pepperdine Waves handed the No. 2 USC Trojans their second defeat in as many days, 5-3.
Ramirez allowed only one run through seven innings for Pepperdine (9-2) before USC (8-4) scored two runs in the top of the eighth at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Josh Persell hit a two-run single down the left field line off reliever Daniel Haren, but Haren got Bill Peavey to ground into a double play to end the Trojans' threat.
Haren, as the designated hitter, went 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI while second baseman Danny Garcia put the Waves on the scoreboard first with a solo home run to left off Trojans' starter Fraser Dizard (1-1).
The big damage for Pepperdine came in the fourth off USC reliever Jordan Olson, who allowed three straight singles, a double and a walk.
Brian Bannister pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings for USC, retiring seven straight batters and recording four strikeouts while Mark Todd pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits.
The Trojans will begin a three-game series with Mississippi State on Friday (Feb. 23) at 5 p.m. at Dedeaux Field, weather permitting. This will be the first time that USC has hosted a Southeastern Conference opponent. All three games of the series will be broadcast on www.usctrojans.com
