UC San Diego Upsets Men's Water Polo

LOS ANGELES - Jonathan Samuels scored the hat trick Sunday as the No. 9 UC San Diego Tritons defeated the host No. 2 USC Trojans, 7-3, in non-conference action at McDonald's Swim Stadium. It was the second straight win by the Tritons (11-1) against the Trojans (3-3) after UCSD recorded a 9-8 victory against USC at the 2000 NCAA Championships in Malibu.
The Tritons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Brett Allan scored at the 3:10 mark on a penalty shot. UCSD took advantage on the power play with Kellan Hori scoring at 6:17 before USC's Predrag Damjanov closed out the first period with a back-handed goal.
UCSD used two power-play goals for three unanswered goals in the second period to take a 5-1 lead and controlled the play for the remainder of the match.
Lance Onken made 10 saves in goal for the Tritons while Bozidar Damjanovic made seven for the Trojans.
USC will compete at the 2001 Nor-Cal Tournament next weekend at Stanford University.
