LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 3rd-ranked USC women's volleyball team notched its 11th-consecutive victory of the season with a 3-0 win over Cal on Saturday (Oct. 13) in front of 638 at the Lyon Center. The Women of Troy improve to 12-1 overall and 7-0 in conference matches, while the Golden Bears drop to 5-9 and 1-7.
Sophomore Katie Olsovsky led the Trojans with a career-high .733 (11-0-15) attack effort - a mark that ranks fifth among USC individual match records. Four finished with double digits in kills including April Ross who added 13. Freshman Keao Burdine tallied 12 digs while DS Nicole Davis tied a career-best with 11 digs of her own.
As a team, USC hit at a .319 (65-22-135) clip and held the Bears to .168 (37-17-119). While out-digging Cal 57 to 38, the Women of Troy were nearly matched at the net as Cal posted 3.0 blocks to the Trojans' 4.0.
Cal answered the Trojans point for point in game one, working its way to a 20-19 lead. But the Bears could only watch as USC turned the tables with a 4-0 run. Cal managed to keep it close but never recaptured the advantage. The Women of Troy rolled to a 30-25 win to start the match.
In game two, USC used runs of 8-5 and 6-1 to establish a five-point lead (22-17). Then the Bears returned with a 9-4 run of their own to tie the score at 26 apiece. From that point on it was the Trojans' game as Burdine pounded two kills and Cal made two attack errors to give up the final two points in the 30-26 USC win.
The Women of Troy were in control by the third game, opening with a 12-8 advantage. At one point, USC posted streaks of five and four points by forcing three Cal errors and benefiting from kills by Ross, setter Toni Anderson, blocker Jennifer Pahl and freshman Emily Adams. After extending the lead to 26-12, the Trojans did allow a brief run by the Bears before ending the game 30-19.
USC will face No. 15 Pepperdine on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Lyon Center, before preparing for No. 5 UCLA in Westwood on Friday, Oct. 19.
