Stanford, Calif. -- In front of 2,261 at Stanford's Maples Pavilion, the No.1-ranked USC women's volleyball team swept the 11th-ranked Cardinal, 3-0, ending Stanford's 45-game home win streak. The Women of Troy improve to 8-0 (3-0 Pac-10) and extend a 24-game win streak with the match victory. Stanford falls to 7-3 overall this season, and 2-1 in the conference race.
The last time USC defeated Stanford at Stanford was in 1977 when the Trojans earned a 3-0 victory en route to the national championship.
The Women of Troy began the match with a powerful attack, holding the Cardinal to .000 hitting and only four points (the lowest for a USC opponent in game one this season). In the second game Stanford jumped to a quick 4-0 lead following two USC attack errors and two Cardinal blocks. The Women of Troy returned with four consecutive points of their own and never looked back. Despite a .038 hitting performance, USC claimed the game two win, 15-8. The final game of the night was controlled entirely by the Trojans who only allowed two Stanford points.
With 25 kills and 25 errors, Stanford never got past the .000 hitting mark in the match. USC hit .337 on the night, while adding nine blocks and 38 kills. Senior outside hitter Janae Henry led the squad with 11 kills off of 19 attacks (.337) and contributed 11 digs. Middle blockers Katie Olsovsky and Jennifer Pahl each tallied six blocks, while Pahl hit .750 for the match.
USC travels to Berkeley tomorrow (Sept. 23) to face Cal. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
