Volleyball Defeats Cougars In Three

Los Angeles, Calif. -- The top-ranked USC women's volleyball team (6-0, 1-0 Pac-10) swept Washington State 3-0 to open Pac-10 play and extend its win streak to six matches and 18 games. In front of 426 at North Gym, tonight's match was the battle of the unbeatens. The Women of Troy now own the only perfect record in the conference, while the Cougars fall to 8-1 (0-1 Pac-10).
The one-hour, thirty minute match was USC's closest this season. Washington State challenged the Trojans from start to finish as they posted 49 kills off of 113 attacks, becoming the first USC opponent this season to hit above .100. The Women of Troy hit .364 with 60 kills, 38 digs and 8.0 blocks.
The Cougars took control early in the match leading for much of the first game. At game point and down by three, USC senior Janae Henry halted the Cougars's momentum to force a sideout for the Trojans. Able to contain WSU's attack, six sideouts allowed the Trojans to post the final five consecutive points and claim the game victory.
In each of the final two games, USC was forced to battle back from a deficit to eventually claim the 16-14, 15-9, 15-8 win.
The Women of Troy had four players post double figures for the first time in 2000 - Janae Henry (15 kills), Antoinette Polk (12 kills), April Ross (12 kills) and Jennifer Pahl (10 kills). Polk displayed her best performance of the season, committing only one error in the match and hitting .647. Washington State had three players who finished in double digits - Chelsie Schafer (12 kills), Adrain Hankoff (11 kills) and LaToya Harris (11 kills).
USC will face Washington tomorrow (Sept. 15) at 6 p.m. at North Gym.
