LOS ANGELES - Scott Wong collected a team-high 19 kills and four other Pepperdine players recorded double-figure kill totals on Tuesday (Feb. 29) to lift the top-ranked Waves to a come-from-behind five-game win over No. 4 USC, 11-15, 15-10, 10-15, 15-7, 15-11, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in front of 1,123 fans at Firestone Fieldhouse.
With the victory, the Waves posted their sixth consecutive win and improved to 11-1 overall and 9-1 in MPSF action. USC fell to 11-3 overall and 7-2 in the MPSF.
It was Pepperdine's second win over the Trojans this season, after also winning in the championship match of the UC Santa Barbara Collegiate Invitational.
USC's 2000 kill leader Brook Billings returned to action after missing the previous 4 matches with a stress fracture in his lower left leg and had 23 kills and 17 digs, both match bests. Teammate Eli Fairfield, who missed the past 2 matches also with a stress fracture in his leg, was back in the lineup and had 19 kills with 5 blocks. Trevor Julian added 14 kills, Mark Dusharme had 10 kills and a match-high 8 blocks and Greg Burden had 13 kills for Troy.
For Pepperdine, Andre Breuer contributed 16 kills, 11 digs and 8 blocks, Donny Killian had 13 kills while hitting .632, and Brad Keenan and Chris Van Reusen each had 12 kills. Keenan hit .550 and Van Reusen had 8 digs.
Pepperdine outhit USC, .240 to .196.
USC next returns home for a pair of 7 p.m. MPSF matches against Hawaii this Friday (March 3) and Saturday (March 4) in the USC North Gym.
