BERKELEY, CALIF. - The USC women's basketball (8-10, 3-5) team was stunned by California, in a 81-64 defeat at Haas Pavilion in Berekely, Calif., tonight (Feb. 3). The Golden Bears captured only their second Pac-10 victory of the season, as the team led the Trojans 43-27 at the half en route to USC's second-worst loss of the year.
Cal's Paige Bowie and Courtney Johnson led the game with 18 points each, as the Bears had four players finished in double-digits. The Women of Troy were led by forward Tashara Carter who added 15 points and six rebounds. The Trojans had three players score in double figures.
For USC, the game didn't start out looking so bad, as the team mounted an 11-4 run during the first 3:01 of play. The Women of Troy scored in their first five possesions, and did not miss a field goal in the first nine minutes of play. California would not take the lead in the first half until Bowie's jumper with 10:53 remaining, put Cal up 21-19. The Bears never trailed again.
Cal managed to outshoot USC 33-23, shooting an overwhelming 64 percent from the floor, as opposed to the Trojans' 41 percent. The Trojans were able to out-rebound the Bears, 34-24, just a game after Cal broke the school's all-time single-game rebounding record and the Pac-10 single-game rebounding record last week against Washington. Cal led in steals, 18-8, while committing 13 fewer turnovers than the Trojans. The Bears forced a season-high 30 turnovers from USC.
USC will prepare to face Stanford on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Maples Pavilion. The game is scheduled the begin at 2 p.m.
