
Women's Water Polo Defeats UCSB, 11-4

LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore 2-meter Nina Wengst (Krefeld, Germany) scored four goals to lead No. 2 USC to an 11-4 victory over No. 7 UC Santa Barbara in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Saturday at the McDonald's Swim Stadium. It was the 2000 home season opener for the Trojans.
USC (7-1 overall, 2-0 MPSF) held a 4-2 lead at halftime and used the third period to pull away, outscoring the Gauchos by a 5-0 margin. UC Santa Barbara drops to 3-7 overall and 0-1 in MPSF play.
Wengst opened the scoring with her first goal at 2:59 of the first period. Megan Wertz scored the first goal for the Gauchos at 6:12 before Wengst followed with her second goal 22 seconds later. Wengst and freshman utility Katrin Dierolf (Esslingen, Germany) scored two goals each in the third period.
With her four goals, Wengst pushed her season total to a team-leading 25 goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Suzannah Johnson (San Jose) had seven saves in goal for the Trojans.
The Women of Troy travel to Long Beach tomorrow for an MPSF match against the 49ers, which will begin at noon.
