The Facts
No. 3/4 USC women's volleyball (19-1, 12-1 Pac-10) returns to Los Angeles to prepare for the annual crosstown battle at Pauley Pavilion. The Women of Troy face 8th-ranked UCLA on Friday, Nov. 3, in a 7 p.m. match which will be televised live on Fox Sports West. The Trojans are coming off three victories over UC Santa Barbara, 3-2, Oregon State, 3-0, Oregon, 3-0, last week.
The Last Outing
USC overcame a 2-0 deficit to hand No. 14 UC Santa Barbara their first home loss of the season 10-15, 12-15, 15-4, 15-4, 15-7 Tuesday (Oct. 24) evening. It was a tale of two halves as the Gauchos won the first two games with a hitting percentage of .289, limiting USC to a .204 mark. But it was a much different story from that point on. USC outscored the Gauchos 45-15 the rest of the way, dominating and out-hitting UCSB .305-to-.067 in the final three games. The Women of Troy also out-blocked Santa Barbara 10 to three after the teams both had posted six blocks in the first two games. Five different Trojans finished with double-digit kills and six finished with double-digit digs. Janae Henry led the attack with 22 kills on the evening, April Ross and Antoinette Polk each had a match-high 23 digs, and Katie Olsovsky led at the net with eight blocks.
The Women of Troy hit .405 and collected 15.0 blocks en route to a 15-7, 15-5, 15-1 victory over the Beavers on Thursday night (Oct. 26). Aside from surpassing the Beavers at the net, USC and OSU matched each other defensively with 43 and 42 digs, respectively. The Women of Troy were led by Janae Henry who contributed a double-double (10 kills, 12 digs), along with Katie Olsovsky who added a team-high 12 kills (.667) and seven blocks. Jennifer Pahl also averaged a .667 attack percentage with 10 kills and six blocks.
USC defeated Oregon 15-8, 15-9, 15-4 in front of 671 fans at McArthur Court Friday (Oct. 27). The Trojans surpassed Oregon in kills (43-36), digs (49-30) and blocks (10-3), while holding the Ducks to .071 hitting. Defensively, Janae Henry recorded 15 digs and freshman April Ross made six stops at the net.
The Rankings
USC is climbing its way back to the top, moving up one spot in each poll this week. In the AVCA/USA Today Coaches Poll USC is No. 3 -- still the highest ranked team in the Pac-10 -- and the Trojans are No. 4 according to Volleyball magazine's Division I poll. Volleyball also ranked the freshman class as the nation's No. 1 recruiting class, and among Pac-10 coaches, USC is picked to finish 3rd in the conference race.
The Last Time...
The last time USC improved to 20-1 was at the start of the 1980 season... The last time USC won both regular season matches against the Bruins was in 1998 (3-1 at home, 3-2 at UCLA)... The last time the Trojans won less that 20 matches in a season was in 1995 (USC has won 20+ matches in 18-of-24 seasons).
Pahl's Unstoppable
Junior Jennifer Pahl not only led the Women of Troy in three victories last week, but exhibited her best series performance yet, averaging a .514 attack percentage and committing only three errors in as many matches. She accounted for 3.6 kills, 1.3 digs and 1.4 blocks per game while leading the team in kills against Oregon and in attack percentage against Oregon State and UC Santa Barbara. With 18 kills and 10 digs against the Gauchos, the 6-1 middle blocker also posted her first double-double of the season. She improved her season hitting percentage to .408 and has hit above .400 in 12 of 19 matches to date.
Freshmen Rule the Net
It was a freshman showcase at the net last week as Katie Olsovsky and April Ross led in blocks through three matches. Olsovsky added a team-high and personal-best eight blocks against UCSB (Oct. 24) and seven against Oregon State (Oct. 26). Ross led with six against Oregon (Oct. 27). Polk Reaches Mark
Senior Antoinette Polk reached a historic mark on Oct. 20 with her first of two digs in the final game against Stanford. With 1,065 career kills and 1,036 career digs to date, Polk became just the 35th player in Pac-10 history and the sixth player at USC to surpass 1,000 in both categories. The last USC athlete to reach this mark was OH Jennifer Kessy (1995-98) who collected 1,799 kills and 1,311 digs in her four-year career.

The Best (Pac-10) Start Ever
With an 10-1 record to start the 2000 conference season, the Women of Troy have posted the program's best start ever in Pac-10 play. The closest the Trojans have ever come is a 7-2 start in the 1989, 1991, 1992, 1997 and 1998 seasons - all under former head coach Lisa Love.
Game Win Streak Ends At 38
USC put an end to a 23-year old record by surpassing a 28-game win streak previously set over the 1976 and 1977 championship seasons. The 2000 USC volleyball team extended its single game win streak to 38 before dropping its first game of the season to UCLA in a 3-1 victory on Friday (Oct. 6). Ironically, the previous record was also broken by UCLA on Oct. 26, 1977 in a USC 3-2 win.
Freshmen Bring Reminders of the Past
The nation's No. 1 (according to Volleyball magazine) freshman class has made a definite impact on USC women's volleyball this season. Ross leads the team in kills per game (3.11), Anderson is splitting time and assists at setter, and Olsovsky is averaging 1.33 blocks per game. As a group (which also includes Kelli Lantz, Nicole Davis and Jamie Carroll), the freshmen have been compared to the class of newcomers that joined USC in 1976 under head coach Chuck Erbe. With Terry Place, Paula Dittmer-Goodwin, Debbie Green and Debbie Landreth, the '76 Trojans went on to win the AIAW National Championship.
Against Ranked Opponents
USC will face its seventh ranked opponent this season against No. 8 UCLA, after earning its fifth win over No. 14 UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday (Oct. 24). Of the six ranked opponents USC has faced, No. 6 Arizona is the only team to have claimed a victory. The Bruins collected 91 team kills compared to the Trojans' 78, but it was USC's defensive efforts that kept it ahead of the game. USC received outstanding performances from all six starters. Among them, Antoinette Polk finished with 17 kills and 12 digs, April Ross led with 25 kills, a .352 attack percentage and 12 digs, Janae Henry added 12 kills and a career-high 25 digs, and Katie Olsovsky notched seven blocks.
