Volleyball Suffers First Loss Of Season

Tucson, Ariz. -- No.1/4 USC women's volleyball (14-1, 8-1 Pac-10) suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of No. 6 Arizona (15-2, 8-1) 10-15, 17-19, 12-15 on Friday (Oct. 13). The two-hour match was played in front of 7,298 at Arizona's McKale Center - the highest attendance figure ever for an Arizona home match.
With the loss, the Trojans remain tied for the conference lead with Arizona. The Wildcats dropped their first match in Pac-10 play to UCLA on Thursday (Oct. 12).
USC, who ranks second in the Pac-10 in blocks per game average, was drastically out-blocked by the conference-leading Wildcats, 19.5 to 9.0. The Women of Troy collected 63 kills off of 187 attacks, but added 37 errors in the match for a season-low .139 attack percentage.
Freshman April Ross led all players with 22 kills and a team-best .306 attack percentage. Senior Antoinette Polk led with 19 digs, while Jennifer Pahl posted three blocks for the team.
Arizona saw five players post double figures in kills and digs, among them middle blocker Stefani Saragosa was unstoppable at the net with 10 blocks which she complemented with a .500 attack effort (13-1-24).
USC returns home to face Cal and Stanford on Thursday (Oct. 19) and Friday (Oct. 20). Both matches will be played at North Gym and begin at 6 p.m.
