LOS ANGELES - Four top high school players -- Lauren Arase of La Canada (Calif.) High; Alison Fennell of Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif.; Jackie Fodor of Chatsworth (Calif.) High and Laura Foster of The Bishop's in La Jolla, Calif. -- have signed letters-of-intent with the USC women's soccer team, USC head coach Jim Millinder announced today.
"These four players are potentially big-time Division I players," said Millinder, who led the 1998 Women of Troy to a 14-7-1 overall record, the Pacific-10 Conference title and the school's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. "With these four, I think we've got what we need to improve upon what we've already built over the last three years. We add an outstanding goal-scorer in Fodor, tremendous speed on the flanks in Fennell and Foster and one of the best goalkeepers in the nation in Arase."
Following are short biographies on each player:
Lauren Arase, a goalkeeper at La Canada High, is a member of the Under-18 national Olympic Development Program team. At La Canada as a junior, she was named 1998 All-CIF Southern Section Division III first team, Daily News All-Area first team and Rio Hondo League Goalkeeper of the Year. She is also a three-time All-League pick. In 1998 she had a 0.86 goals- against average as La Canada won its second straight Rio Hondo League title. She also plays for the Santa Anita Sting club team.
Alison Fennell, a midfielder at Mater Dei High, is a two-time (1997-98) All-CIF Southern Section Division II first teamer. She also made the 1998 Orange County Register All-Orange County first team and Los Angeles Times All-Orange County second team as a junior, when she had 24 goals and 11 assists. She plays for the Southern California Blues, which won the State Cup last year and reached the semifinals of the West Regional tournament.
Jackie Fodor, a forward at Chatsworth High, has made the Daily News All-Area first team three times (1996-97-98). She had 24 goals and 24 assists as a junior in 1998 (earning City Section MVP honors and leading Chatsworth to the City 4-A title), 28 goals as a 1997 sophomore (including three in the City Section title match) and 18 goals as a 1996 freshman. She was an All-League pick all three years. As a member of the Las Virgenes Blazers club team, she reached the national semifinals in 1996 (and was the team's leading scorer) and the national finals in 1997. She now plays with the Santa Anita Sting.
Laura Foster, a midfielder at The Bishop's, was an All-CIF San Diego Section first teamer as a 1997 sophomore and a second teamer as a 1996 freshman. Both seasons, The Bishop's won the CIF title. She also played on the Olympic Development Program's state team in 1997 and for the Mission Viejo and San Dieguito Surf club teams.
