LOS ANGELES - The USC baseball team, the defending national champion, was named the No. 1 team in the country in the Baseball America preseason Top 25 on Tuesday.
Previously, USC was ranked No. 3 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll.
Also, junior catcher Eric Munson was named to the preseason All-American first team. He was the only unanimous selection.
USC is one of five 1998 College World Series teams that are in the top eight, the others being No. 2 Long Beach State, No. 3 Miami, No. 4 Florida State and No. 8 LSU.
USC will face seven teams in the top 25 in 1999: Long Beach State, No. 7 Stanford, No. 12 Arizona State, No. 14 Cal State Fullerton, No. 19 Texas Tech, No. 20 Washington and No. 23 California.
The season begins on Feb. 2 when USC hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills at Dedeaux Field at 3 p.m.
