Los Angeles - The No. 8 USC women's volleyball team defeated UCLA for the fourth consecutive time, 15-9, 9-15, 15-3, 15-6 in a Pacific-10 Conference match on Friday (Oct. 2) before 1,079 at a capacity North Gym. USC, winner of its fifth straight match, improved to 9-3 overall, 4-1 in the Pac-10. UCLA fell to 3-8, 3-2.
Women of Troy senior outside hitter Jennifer Kessy posted match highs with 27 kills and 15 digs and senior All-American middle blocker Jasmina Marinkovic added 15 kills while hitting a match-high .609. Sophomore outside hitter Antoinette Polk added a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs.
The Bruins were led by freshmen outside hitters Ashley Bowles and Kristee Porter, who had 20 and 19 kills, respectively.
USC outhit UCLA, .421 to .286, held a blocking advantage of nine to two and had nine services aces to UCLAs one.
The Women of Troy opened strong in Game 1, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. The Bruins climbed back with five straight points, but USC responded with a similar run to close out the game.
Game 2 was a close affair, tied at 5-5, until UCLA used a 9-1 run to take a 14-6 lead. The Bruins, who hit .541 in the game, held off a brief Women of Troy rally to even the match.
UCLA opened Game 3 with a 3-0 run, but USC responded with 15 consecutive points, outhitting the Bruins, .458 to -.065.
Game 4 marked another close affair, but USC turned a 6-5 lead into a comfortable 12-5 margin with six straight points, winning the match shortly after on a solo block by freshman middle blocker Jennifer Pahl. Pahl finished with a career-high six blocks.
USC travels to the Arizona schools next weekend.
