Men's Basketball to Play in 1999 Wooden Classic

LOS ANGELES - The USC men's basketball team will play Duke and Auburn will meet Stanford in the 1999 John R. Wooden Classic on Nov. 27 at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim in the John R. Wooden Classic, Atherton Communications, organizers of the Wooden Classic, announced today.
The 1999 Wooden Classic continues its tradition of showcasing the nation's finest teams and coaches with an illustrious field representing three of the nation's most prominent conferences. USC is making its debut in the Wooden Classic, as are SEC champion Auburn and ACC champion Duke. Stanford will make its second appearance at the Wooden Classic.
"We are very pleased to be playing in the John R. Wooden Classic. It is annually one of the top tournaments in the country and always attracts excellent teams. I learned a lot from Coach Wooden as a player and still use many of his principles today. I am happy to be associated with the tournament and for what Coach Wooden stands for," USC Coach Henry Bibby said.
In game one, Stanford will face Auburn in the first meeting between the two schools. Game two of the doubleheader will match Duke against USC. The Trojans are 2-2 in the all-time series against the Blue Devils.
Established in 1994, the John R. Wooden Classic is an annual tribute to the legendary former UCLA coach and the excellence he personifies. The event traditionally hosts college basketball's elite programs including the last four NCAA Champions. The Wooden Classic is a celebration of the game of basketball and the activities benefit Special Olympics Southern California and high school athletic programs. In addition to the annual NCAA showcase doubleheader, the events include the Wooden Classic High School Basketball Invitational, the Wooden Classic Golf Tournament and the Wooden Classic Banquet.
