AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 1 USC baseball team made a nice comeback, but it wasn't enough to offset five errors, which led to seven unearned runs, and the Trojans lost at Texas, 9-8, on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans (1-2) lost their second straight to the Longhorns (4-0), but get another chance on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Trailing 9-5 entering the top of the ninth inning, the Trojans rallied and had the tying run on third base before the game ended. Junior pinch-hitter Carlos Casillas led off the inning with a single. After the first out and a wild pitch, sophomore SS Seth Davidson singled home sophomore pinch- runner Josh Self. Following a walk to junior C Eric Munson and the second out of the inning, freshman 3B Beau Craig singled home Davidson and Munson to make it 9-8.
Senior LF Dominic Correa blooped a single down the right-field line to advance Craig, the potential tying run, to third base, but the final Trojan hitter struck out.
A few Trojans had good days at the plate. Davidson had a career-high four hits, Correa went 3- for-5 with his first career home run and Ticehurst went 2-for-4 with a solo home run.
Ticehurst's home run cut Texas' lead in half, to 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning. USC was poised to score again, but on an apparent sacrifice fly, Craig was called out for leaving third base too early.
Texas capitalized in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring four unearned runs on two Trojan errors. Texas sophomore SS Jason Moore hit a two-run homer.
The Longhorns added two more unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-1.
USC's bats got going in the top of the seventh, as senior 1B Justin Lehr hit a two-run home run, and Correa added a two-run shot in the top of the eighth. The home runs sandwiched another Texas unearned run in the the bottom of the seventh.
USC junior LHP Barry Zito (0-1) took the loss, going five innings and giving up eight runs (only two earned), eight hits and five walks while striking out three.
