Los Angeles, Calif. -- After enduring a narrow defeat at the hands of UCLA last night (Nov. 19) in a two-hour, 52-minute match, No. 15 USC returned this morning, Nov. 20, to sweep Fairfield University, 3-0 (15-6, 15-9, 15-10). Led by the efforts of middle blocker Amber Oliver (11 kills, 5 blocks), the win marked Troy's final regular season game to be played at home this season.
USC improves to 19-7 overall and remains 13-5 in the Pac-10. The loss is only the Stags second of the season, as the 1999 MAAC (Midatlantic Athletic Conference) champions fall to 30-2 overall.
Oliver also posted a team-best .625 attack percentage, while outside hitter Lauren Killian hit for .400 with five kills of off 10 attacks in one game played. Sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Pahl added a career-high 18 digs in addition to 10 kills for a .318 attack percentage. Despite outhitting the Stags, .320 to .121, Troy was matched block-for-block as each team accounted for 7.0 stops.
Fairfield was led offensively by outside hitter Joanne Saunders who tallied 15 kills. Defensively, middle blockers Kim Thomas (4 blocks), Corrine Carlson (3) and Sasha Blake all assisted in the team effort.
The Women of Troy have two remaining nonconference matches left to play this season. The team will face James Madison (Nov. 26) and UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 27) at the Long Beach State Tournament after the Thanksgiving holiday.
