Women's Volleyball Earns 3-0 Win Against Golden Bears

Los Angeles -- Freshman OH Lauren Killian ensured a 3-0 (15-8, 15-12, 15-10) USC victory tonight (Oct. 9) with a match-high seven blocks at the North Gym. The Trojan defense managed to contain the Golden Bears to a .083 team attack percentage on the night.
USC improves to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the Pac-10, rebounding from its loss to Stanford last night. California returns home after being swept by both USC and UCLA this weekend. The Golden Bears are now 7-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Despite a lackluster offensive performance, the Trojans came away with a .218 team attack percentage in the match. Outside hitters Janae Henry and Antoinette Polk led the squad with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Kashi Cormier and Jennifer Pahl tallied an identical team-high .353 attack (9-3-17 each). Henry and DS Julie Mariani each tied career-bests with three service aces.
California saw its best play in game two as the team posted a .170 hitting percentage and added 17 kills. OH Alicia Perry claimed 11 of those kills, but came away with a .086 attack percentage. MB Kellie Alva added pressure at the net with a team-high five blocks.
After claiming a victory in game one with ease (15-8), the Trojans were stunned as the Golden Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two following three consecutive blocks by Alva. The Women of Troy trailed until a service ace by Polk tied the score at 10-10. Troy posted two more service aces, and added a kill by Pahl to take its first two-point lead in the game (14-12), eventually earning the win on a Cal attack error. Game three saw much of the same struggles, as Cal matched USC point-for-point. A kill by OH Kashi Cormier finally allowed the Trojans to break away at 10-9. Cal again surrendered the game, giving up three attack errors, and allowing two USC kills.
USC will now prepare for a cross-town battle with UCLA on Wednesday, October 13. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion.
