Los Angeles - Despite a high-powered attack from OH Kashi Cormier (10 kills, .625), No.17 USC fell to No. 6 Stanford, 3-0 (15-8, 15-6, 15-9), tonight at the North Gym. The loss marked the first time the Women of Troy were swept in three games this season.
USC dropped to 8-4 overall, and 3-2 in the Pac-10. Stanford, after a 1-3 loss to UCLA last night (Oct. 7), improved to 12-2 overall, and 6-1 in conference play.
Two Trojans posted double-figure kills, including Cormier and MB Jennifer Pahl (10 kills, .286). Cormier's .625 attack effort marked a personal career best. Setter Hiedi Munneke hit for .429 (4 kills) and added 28 assists. Aside from their efforts, USC struggled offensively, posting its lowest attack percentage this season (.173). The Trojans only accumulated 4.0 team blocks to Stanford's 8.0, breaking a seven-match streak in which the team has out-blocked its opponent.
The Cardinal were led by freshman outside hitter Tom Logan who posted a match-high 18 kills. The team had seven players who hit above .350 on the night including Kerri Walsh (.412), Lindsay Kagawa (.400), Sara Sandrik (.353), Tara Conrad (.538), Lindsey Yamasaki (.500), Jennifer Detmer (1.000) and Tom. Accounting for 52 total kills, Stanford only tallied 15 attack errors on the night.
The Women of Troy suffered offensively in game one, collecting 13 errors off of just 44 attacks (.068). With minor improvement in game two, USC allowed Stanford to convert 15 of just 31 attacks. The Trojans returned in game three to take the first lead of the match, 3-2, following a kill by Pahl. Maintaining control of the ball, USC held a 7-6 lead but allowed a service ace by Yamasaki to tie the game. Stanford soon regained momentum and forced Troy to surrender a 15-9 win for the Cardinal match victory
The Trojans return to North Gym tomorrow night (Oct. 9) to face California. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
