Los Angeles, Calif. -- Led by a career-best performance by OH Kashi Cormier, three Trojans tallied double-digit kills in USC's 3-0 (15-12, 15-9, 15-8) defeat of Washington tonight at North Gym. With renewed strength at the net, the 17th-ranked Women of Troy out-hit (.309 to .158) and out-blocked (11.0 to 8.0) the Huskies in the on hour, 45-minute match.
USC improves to 14-5 overall and 9-3 in the Pac-10, while maintaining third-place standing in the conference. Washington falls to 8-13 overall and 4-9 in the Pac-10.
Posting a .474 attack percentage on the night, Cormier accounted for a career-high 23 kills and recorded 12 digs for her fourth double-double this season. Cormier was accompanied by OH Antoinette Polk (17 kills, .279) and MB Jennifer Pahl (13 kills, .320) who each also added 13 and 8 digs, respectively. OH Janae Henry guided the Trojan defense with a match-high 16 digs, while tieing a personal record with five total blocks in the match. Freshman Lauren Killian led the team at the net with six blocks.
Though supplied with plenty of power hitters, the Huskies struggled to convert at the net. OH Kristina Laffling led the team with 16 digs, but only averaged a .140 attack effort. The highest team attack percentage came from hitter Allison Richardson who added nine kills off of 28 attacks (.321). Richardson also tallied four blocks for Washington.
After allowing its last two opponents to take control of the blocking effort, USC displayed an improved and powerful performance against the Huskies. Appropriately, the Trojans sealed the first two game victories with a final block for game point. In game one, it was a solo block by Henry that ensured the win, and in game two the final stop came from Henry and Pahl, all despite the absence of MB Amber Oliver. With a consistent effort throughout the match, the Women of Troy, averaged 23.3 kills per game and accumulated no more than nine errors in a single contest.
Oliver returned to the injured list after reaggravating an ankle sprain she suffered in late September in Wednesday's (Oct. 27) practice. She is currently listed as day to day. Troy returns to action tomorrow night, October 30, at North Gym against Washington State. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
