USC head rowing coach Josh Adam announced the addition of Liz Smith to the Trojan coaching staff, today (August 2).
"We have been blessed with the addition of a great coach to the Trojan Rowing staff," said Adam. "Liz and I have had the opportunity to work together before, and she has improved so much as a rowing coach throughout the years. I am excited for her to arrive at Troy to complete our coaching team."
Smith joins the Women of Troy after most recently holding an assistant coaching position at Michigan State. While coaching the Spartans, she assisted in signing the largest recruiting class in program history. She also helped to contribute to the Spartans' highest post-season team ranking in the last six years. Smith was vital in coaching the team's true walk-on athletes to not only learn the sport of rowing, but compete at a high level at the Big Ten Championship.
From 2016-17, Smith was on the coaching staff at her alma mater, Washington State. While with the Cougars, Smith was in charge of the novice program as well as operational duties and recruiting visits.
During the 2016 rowing season, Smith was a graduate assistant coach for Boston University while completing her master's degree in Coaching and Physical Education. She primarily coached the Terrier fours. During the summer of 2016, she was an assistant coach for the men's and women's summer racing teams at the New York Athletic Club.
From 2013-15, Smith rowed for the Riverside Boat Club in Boston participating in the High Performance Group. In addition, she assisted as the club's media coordinator, led sponsorship and community outreach initiatives and ran the club's social media accounts.
During the 2013 season, Smith was an assistant novice coach for her first stint at Washington State.
A native of Richlands, Va., Smith transferred to Washington State for the 2009-10 season after spending freshman year at Clemson. As a sophomore, she rowed with the varsity four and second varsity eight crews, finishing eighth with the second varsity eight boat at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Smith rowed with the varsity eight and second varsity eight crews as a junior, helping the second varsity eight boat to a 10th-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships. She rowed with the varsity eight boat as a senior and was named to the 2012 U.S. Under-23 Team the following summer. She raced in the straight four at the 2012 U23 Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.
