Bio
BREAKDOWN: Kevin Porter Jr. was a 6-6, 218-pound athletic guard who showed he could score from anywhere on the court and possessed the ability to break down a defense and make plays.  Injuries slowed down the talented guard’s output in his one season playing for the Trojans.
2018-19: Porter Jr. averaged 9.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 21 games. He missed roughly half of the preseason practices with assorted minor injuries and USC’s two closed scrimmages prior to the season. Answered the bell on Opening Day and scored 15 points on 6 of 7 shooting vs. Robert Morris on Nov. 6...it was the most points by a USC freshman in his first game since Jordan McLaughlin scored 19 in his debut in 2014. He made his first career start in USC’s third game on Nov. 14 vs. Stetson and scored 12 points. He started against vs. Texas Tech on Nov. 19 and scored 15 points. Started again vs. Missouri State on Nov. 20 and scored 14 points, but suffered a right quadriceps contusion which would cause him to miss all but four minutes of the next 10 games. He tried to play vs. Nevada on Dec. 1, but had no points or shots in four minutes. Porter Jr. averaged 14.0 points in USC’s first five games and was the only Trojan to score in double figures in each game. He returned to action at Oregon State on Jan. 10 and scored five points in 25 minutes off the bench. He missed the next two games due to conduct issues, but returned to score 14 points vs. Arizona on Jan. 24. That was the beginning of 11 straight games played, his longest streak of the season before missing the game on March 7 at Utah with a sprained ankle. He recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds vs. Oregon State on Feb. 23. He made his final start of the season at UCLA on Feb. 28 and scored 10 points. He scored a season-best 17 points in USC’s Pac-12 Tournament Quarterfinals loss to Washington on March 14. Porter Jr. scored in double figures in 11 of his 21 games played, which included four starts.
HIGH SCHOOL: Porter graduated from Rainier Beach High in Seattle, Wash. in 2018. The four-star recruit averaged 27 points, 14 rebounds and five assists as a senior and led his team to a 22-7 record. His Rainier Beach team lost the Washington state title game to teammate J’Raan Brooks’ Garfield team, 72-63, despite 22 points and 12 rebounds by Porter. He also scored 29 points in the state quarterfinals win over Wilson. Porter was voted the No. 1 player in the state of Washington and named “Mr. Basketball” for the state by the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association. Porter was ranked the No. 16 recruit in the 2018 class by Rivals.com and No. 28 by 247Sports.com. He becomes USC’s first Rivals.com five-star recruit since DeMar DeRozan in 2008. Porter was named Co-Player of the Year at the 2018 Allen Iverson Roundball Classic.
