THIS YEAR: Graduate student and All-America thrower McKay Johnson is in his second season as a thrower on the USC track and field team, following his transfer from California. His brother Christian is also a member of the USC track and field team. McKay is the USC indoor record-holder in the shot put and ranks fourth on USC's all-time outdoor list.
2021: Johnson set the USC indoor shot put record with a mark of 70-4.50 (21.45m) at the Texas Tech Shootout. He placed second in the shot put with a mark of 66-3 (20.19m) at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He won the discus throw with a mark of 173-2 (52.79m) at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet...He placed second in the Dual Meet shot put competition with a mark of 66-2.50 (20.18m), which moved him into fourth on USC's all-time list. Johnson placed 11th in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a mark of 62-7.75 (19.09m). He also placed fourth in the shot put (63-3.75) and ninth in the discus throw (173-0) at the Pac-12 Championships.
BEFORE USC: Johnson transferred to USC from California where he was a two-time All-American in the shot put and two-time team captain. He has outdoor PRs of 65-1.50 (19.85m) in the shot put and 183-3 (55.86m) in the discus throw and 67-8.25 (20.63m) in the indoor shot put. During the 2020 indoor season he won the MPSF shot put title with a mark of 67-0.75 (20.44m). He also set his indoor PR and California record with a mark of 67-8.25 (20.63m) at the New Mexico Team Open on Feb. 1. He sat out the 2019 outdoor season due to injury. Finished eighth in the shot put with a mark of 64-6.50 (19.67m) at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships. Set his then indoor PR with a mark of 67-2.00 (20.47m) in taking second at the 2019 MPSF Championships. In 2018 he also was an indoor All-American in the shot put, placing eighth with a mark of 63-5.50 (19.34m). During the 2018 outdoor season, he was one of three people to reach the NCAA Championships in the shot put and discus. He placed second in both the shot put and discus throw at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships. Named Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Week for April 3 as he recorded the second-best shot put in school history with a a throw of 64-11.50 (19.80m) at the Stanford Invitational. In 2017 he placed fourth in the shot put and seventh in the discus throw at the Pac-12 Championships. He also placed third in the shot put with a PR of 65-1.50 (19.85m) and sixth in the discus with a throw of 177-10 (54.20m) at the 2017 USATF Junior Championships.
HIGH SCHOOL: McKay is a 2016 graduate of Clovis North HS in Fresno, Calif. He holds school records in the shot put of 64-1.57 and discus throw of 188-10, both marks which are in the top 10 all-time in California Central Section history. He earned All-League, All-Valley and All-State honors as a senior en route to being named Co-Outstanding Field Athlete of the Year. He was an honor roll student and spent four years working with student government.
PERSONAL: Zachary “McKay” Johnson was born on April 15, 1998…His parents are Zak and Jennifer and he has one brother, Christian, who is a freshman on USC’s track and field team…His father was a decathlete at USC…In his spare time he likes to work out, listen to music and watch movies…His favorite movie is Rocky III and his favorite musical artist is Prince…Lists his sports hero as Werner Gunther because he showed you have to be a master of multiple disciplines to become great…His favorite food is chicken parmesan…Someday would like to travel to Greece…Earned his undergraduate degree in Sociology from California…Is working on a master’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Marshall School of Business.
