THIS YEAR: Â Senior Sam VanDorpe is in his fourth season as an 800m runner for USC. Â He ranks sixth on USC's all-time indoor 800m list.
2021: Â VanDorpe took second in the 800m at the USC-UCLA Dual meet with a PR of 1:48.65. Â He placed fifth in the 800m with a time of 1:49.12 at the Pac-12 Championships. He then advanced to the NCAA West Quarterfinals by running 1:48.98 in the prelims. Â His time of 1:50.52 in the quarterfinals earned him 20th place. During the indoor season, VanDorpe won the 800m with an indoor PR 1:49.98 at the Woo Pig Classic. Â That time moved him into sixth on USC's all-time indoor 800m list. Â
2020: Â He ran in two indoor meets and placed 10th in the 800m with a time of 1;51.98 at the MPSF Championships. Â Did not compete in the outdoor season before it was cancelled due to COVID-19.
2019: Â He began his USC 800m career with a winning time of 1:51.64 at the Power 5 Challenge. Â He placed 14th with a time of 1:52.21 in the 800m at the Pac-12 Championships. Â He set his 800m PR of 1:48.88 to finish 13th at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, one spot short of advancing to the NCAA Championships. He set his 1500m PR of 3:51.36 at the Mt. SAC Relays. Â During the indoor season he ran 1:51.65 in the 800m at the Texas Tech Classic to move into seventh on USC's all-time indoor 800m list. He finished 11th in the 800m at the MPSF Championships with a time of 1:52.96.
HIGH SCHOOL:  VanDorpe is a 2018 graduate of Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif.   He has PRs of 1:51.07 in the 800m and 4:16 in the 1600m.  He was the 2018 CIF Masters Meet 800m champion and placed third in the event at the state meet his personal best of 1:51.07.  His time of 1:51.07 is the Mater Dei school record.  He also competed in cross country and became the only three-time MVP in school history.  He was a two-time captain in track and cross country. He ran a 48.0 anchor leg on Mater Dei’s 4x400m relay to win the league title.  He was an honor roll student (4.0+) all eight semesters of high school.
PERSONAL:  Sam was born on April 21, 2000 in Orange, Calif…His parents are Lisa and Tom VanDorpe and he has one sister, Camille…Likes to relax by hanging out with friends and playing video games…Lists his sports hero as Kobe Bryant for his ability to make awesome plays and to do so consistently…you are not a great athlete until you can perform at the highest level consistently…His favorite television show is Curb Your Enthusiasm…His favorite musical artists are Odesza, Fischer,  Kyle and Tame Impala/Pond…After graduation would like to become a real estate developer…He is a Business Administration major at USC.
