Trojans Advance to Big Ten Tournament Semifinals with 7-0 Win Over Michigan State
May 22, 2026 | Baseball
OMAHA, Neb. –The No. 25 USC baseball team opened the Big Ten Tournament with a 7-0 shutout of Michigan State on Friday morning in Omaha, advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
The Trojans will face the winner of UCLA and Purdue on Saturday at 2 p.m. USC moves to 43-14 on the year with the win, while Michigan State ends its season at 24-32.
The Trojans jumped out front early, putting up a pair of runs in the first on an RBI double by Kevin Takeuchi and RBI triple by Isaac Cadena. Jack Basseer singled in two runs in the third and then Dean Carpentier had an RBI triple and Abbrie Covarrubias hit a two-run double in the fifth to make it a 7-0 USC lead.
That was all the Trojans needed as Mason Edwards was stellar in his 4.0 innings of work, only exiting early due to a 90-minute rain delay. The junior lefty struck out six while giving up just two hits in his third straight scoreless outing. His six K's moved him to 160 strikeouts on the season, putting Edwards in fourth place on USC's all-time single-season list and giving him the most strikeouts by a Trojan pitcher since Mark Prior had a program-record 202 in 2001.
Andrew Johnson would follow the rain delay with 2.0 scoreless innings before handing it off to Chase Herrell. Herrell tossed 2.0 scoreless frames of his own and then Ben Cushnie worked a scoreless ninth to close it out.
The 7-0 win was the 10th shutout of the year for USC, improving a total that was already No. 1 in the country.
