No. 24 USC Women’s Rowing Finishes the Rocky Top Invite

The Trojans’ Second Varsity Eight was the only boat to place in the finals.
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Highlighted by the Second Varsity Eight making the finals after two competitive races, the No. 24 USC women's rowing team wrapped up its stint at the University of Tennessee's Rocky Top Invite, held at Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on Saturday, April 4.
Of the Trojans' three boats at the competitive regatta, the Second Varsity Eight was the only one to make the finals, where it placed fourth with a time of 6:51.859. USC's Varsity Eight and Varsity Four barely missed the cut and ended up with top-three finishes in the consolation finals.
Over the course of two days, all boats raced twice en route to the finals. Friday's prelims were held for lane assignments for Saturday morning's semifinals. From there, the top two boats in each semifinal and the next fastest time made the finals.
USC's Second Varsity Eight was the only boat with two top-three finishes before the finals. The Trojans placed third in the prelims, which set up a close semifinal race.
On Saturday morning, the Trojans fended off Clemson throughout a close race that saw neither team lead by more than three seconds until the Trojans pulled away in the last 1,000 meters. USC's 6:45.11 in the semifinals edged out UCLA's time of 6:47.70 in the other heat for the last spot in the finals. USC would go on to place fourth in the final with a time of 6:51.86.
USC's Varsity Four struggled in Friday's prelims by placing fifth in its first two races before winning the consolation finals in 7:37.36. The Trojans led wire-to-wire in the consolation final and beat second-place Iowa by nearly five seconds.
The Varsity Eight fared similarly by placing fifth in Friday's prelims and the semifinals to send them to the consolation finals. The Trojans placed third in the consolation finals in a race decided by less than five seconds.
No. 5 Tennessee swept all six races to win the regatta in dominant fashion.
