No. 19 USC Falls to No. 21 UCLA, 4-0, in Big Ten Quarterfinals

Trojans come up short against the Bruins in Ojai.
OJAI, CALIF. — The No. 4 seeded USC men's tennis team saw its Big Ten Tournament run come to a close on Thursday afternoon, falling 4-0 to No. 5 seed UCLA in the quarterfinals at Libbey Park.
The Trojans (18-7) opened the match by grabbing an early edge in doubles as Max Exsted and Nathan Trouve earned a 6-3 win on center court. UCLA, however, responded with wins on courts three and two to secure the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, the Bruins quickly built momentum, picking up straight-set victories on courts two and six to move within a point of clinching. No. 87 Rudy Quan defeated No. 70 Exsted 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 position, while Cassius Chinlund outlasted Niels Hoffmann 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) on court six to make it 3-0.
The clincher came on court four, where Aadarsh Tripathi battled past Jack McCarthy in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, to seal the 4-0 decision for UCLA.
Several other matches were left unfinished at the time of the decision. At the top spot, No. 84 Branko Djuric was in a tight battle with No. 52 Spencer Johnson, splitting the first two sets before trailing 2-1 in the third. Andrin Casanova (court three) and Connor Church (court five) had also forced third sets in their respective matches.
With the loss, USC wraps up its run at the Big Ten Championship Tournament. The Trojans now turn their attention to the upcoming NCAA Championships, with the selection show set for Monday, April 27.Â
