No. 5 USC Beach Volleyball Defeats Cal In Opening Round Of MPSF Championship

The Women of Troy move on to face Stanford tomorrow in the second round.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – No. 5 USC Beach Volleyball (27-9) faced California in the first round of the MPSF Championship, with the fourth-seeded Women of Troy securing the 3-1 win over the fifth-seeded Bears on Wednesday, April 22, at Spiker Beach. This is the third time USC has beaten Cal this season.

The 5s saw USC's Madison Goellner and Kaileigh Truslow secure a victory over California's Bella Adishian and Mila Yarich in straight sets, 21-17, 21-18. This match was the first to conclude, giving the Trojans an early lead in the dual.

The fourth flight featured a competitive match between Kyra Zaengle and Calinda Kok of the Trojans and Gia Fisher and Ava Haughy of the Bears. Zaengle and Kok managed to pick up a point for the Trojans in straight sets, 21-15, 22-20.

In the No. 3 spot, Bella Satterwhite and Kerry Keefe contended with Cal's Mila Vugrincic and Jenna Colligan. Despite a strong effort, the Trojan pair fell in two sets, 18-21, 21-23, as California picked up its first point.

The second flight had USC's Ashley Pater and Kennedy Coakley in a three-set battle against California's Grace Hong and Marilu Pally. The Trojans clinched the dual with a 14-21, 21-15, 15-9 win, putting the third and deciding point on the board.

Sarah Wood and Zoey Henson competed for USC in the No. 1 spot against Emma Donley and Portia Sherman. Their match was not finished, although USC was up 14-10 in the third set.
