Mason Edwards Leads No. 13 USC Baseball to 5-0 Shutout of Washington
March 20, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Mason Edwards was again dominant as the No. 13 USC baseball team tossed a two-hit shutout to open its series against Washington with a 5-0 win on Friday night.
Edwards combined with Gavin Lauridsen to hold the Huskies in check all night as USC moves to 22-1 overall and 6-1 in Big Ten play with the win. Washington falls to 9-12, 4-3.
Edwards worked six scoreless innings while striking out a career-high 12 batters to move to 5-0 on the season. He gave up just one hit and three walks, allowing only one runner past first base in his first five innings of work. The lone spot of trouble for the junior lefty came in the sixth, as Washington got runners to second and third with two outs, but Edwards recorded his 12th strikeout to strand them both.
Lauridsen entered the game with a 5-0 lead to start the seventh and kept the visiting Huskies off the board the rest of the way for his second save of the season. The freshman righty gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out four batters.
The Trojans opened the scoring in the third inning, getting a pair of runs on three Washington errors in the inning. Adrian Lopez and Kevin Takeuchi then doubled the lead in the fourth with RBI singles. Lopez tacked on a fifth run in the sixth inning, scoring Abbrie Covarrubias with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
Covarrubias had two hits and scored three runs in the game, while Lopez led the way with three RBI.
Edwards has now gone at least six innings and struck out 10 or more batters in each of his last five starts. For the season, he owns a 0.25 ERA, with 64 strikeouts, 14 walks and seven hits allowed.
