No. 13 USC Baseball Secures Series With 7-2 Win Over Washington

LOS ANGELES – The No. 13 USC baseball team rode an early lead to a 7-2 victory over Washington on Saturday night at Dedeaux Field.

The Trojans scored all seven runs in the first two innings, moving to 23-1 overall and 7-1 in Big Ten play with the win. Washington falls to 9-13, 4-4.

The Trojan bats exploded out of the gates with three runs in the first and four in the second to take a commanding early lead. Augie Lopez capped the three-run first with a solo-homer and Kevin Takeuchi drove in his second run of the game with an RBI double to cap the second, after also sacrificing a run home in the first. Adrian Lopez, Isaac Cadena and Abbrie Covarrubias each had RBI in the first two innings as well.

Washington hit a solo-homer in the second to score their first run of the game, but wouldn't get another off of Grant Govel until his final inning on the mound in the sixth, with the Huskies scoring their second on an RBI single. Govel limited the damage each time, giving up just the two runs on four hits and one walk. He stranded three Washington runners on the night.

After Sax Matson tossed a scoreless seventh inning, Diego Velazquez brought it home with two scoreless frames on the mound, recording his second strikeout on the final batter of the game.
