No. 25 Trojans Take No-Hitter into 11th, Beat Cal Poly 6-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The No. 25 USC baseball team came two outs away from an 11-inning no hitter, picking up a 6-0 victory in extra innings on Friday night at Cal Poly.
Mason Edwards and Sax Matson combined for 10 no-hit innings and USC scored six runs in the top of the 11th to move to 9-0 on the year. Cal Poly falls to 4-5 with the loss.
The Trojans had five hits and no runs coming into the 11th, but Jack Basseer doubled in the first two runs of the game to open the flood gates. Maddox Riske drove in a pair as well with a single and Richard Tejeda drove in one and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.
Mason Edwards was masterful through 7.0 innings, giving up no hits or runs while matching his career high with 11 strikeouts. He did have to strand six batters after two USC errors and four walks, but was able to do so each time he needed to. The Mustangs had runners on the corners with two outs in the seventh, but Edwards' final pitch of the game was a swinging strike to end the threat. He also stranded runners on first and second in both the first and third innings.
Sax Matson took over to start the eighth and proceeded to retire nine straight batters, with five strikeouts, no walks, no hits and no runs in 3.0 innings of work. Matson would pick up the victory as the pitcher of record in the 11th.
Diego Velazquez closed things out in the bottom of the 11th, retiring the first batter he faced before a ground ball up the middle finally found a hole and gave a hit to the home team. Velazquez responded by getting a double-play ball to third base to end the game.
