No. 25 USC Baseball Breaks Out Bats in 16-2 Win at Cal Poly

In addition to the red-hot offense, USC held the Mustangs to just five hits and two runs, moving to 10-0 on the year with the win. Cal Poly falls to 4-6 with the loss.
Maximo Martinez led the charge with four hits and five RBI in the game, hitting a grand slam and three doubles in a career day for the sophomore infielder. Martinez is the first player since Ben Wanger in 2020 to hit three doubled in the game for the Trojans.
Kevin Takeuchi and Jack Basseer also homered in the contest and Adrian Lopez, Maddox Riske and Basseer all had two-RBI games. Eight different Trojans drove in runs and nine USC players had hits in the game. Riske was the first USC player since Rhylan Thomas in 2022 to record five hits in a game, going 5-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Grant Govel was once again lights out on the mound, picking up the win after tossing 7.0 innings while giving up just one earned run on four hits. Govel struck out six and walked none. The USC bullpen closed the game out with 2.0 scoreless innings. Paul Grossman tossed a scoreless eighth and Rohan Kasanagottu got the first two outs of the ninth before Andrew Harbour finished it off.
Cal Poly scored a run in the first to go up 1-0, but from there it was all USC, with the Trojans scoring six in the third and five in the fifth to bust it open. USC put up two runs in the second and then Takeuchi and Basseer hit back-to-back homers to spark the six-run third. Martinez's slam came in the fifth to make it a 14-1 ballgame.
USC's 16 runs were the most by the Trojans since April 25 of last season, a 16-6 win at Minnesota. The Trojans' 14-run margin of victory was the largest for USC since a 16-2 win over Western Michigan on Feb. 14, 2020.
