No. 25 USC Baseball Opens Series With 4-0 Win at Cal Poly
February 26, 2026 | Baseball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The No. 25 USC baseball team ran its season-opening win streak to eight games with a 4-0 victory over Cal Poly on Thursday night in San Luis Obispo.
The Trojans opened the four-game series with their third shutout of the season, moving to 8-0 with their first road win. Cal Poly falls to 4-4 with the loss.
The Trojans opened the scoring in the third, with Abbrie Covarrubias scoring on a wild pitch after stealing second and third, and then getting a sac fly from Adrian Lopez to make it 2-0. Covarrubias again manufactured a run for USC in the fifth, tripling off the wall and scoring on another wild pitch. The Trojans made it a 4-0 game in the seventh when Kevin Takeuchi tripled in Isaac Cadena.
The Mustangs threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but Sax Matson proved yet again to be an escape artist for the Trojans, entering the game and fanning the batter to strand all three. Cal Poly also had a pair in scoring position with one out in the fifth, but Chase Herrell was able to work out of his own jam, striking out a batter and then getting a flyout to center to keep the home team off the scoreboard.
Matson would get the first two outs of the eighth before handing the game over to Adam Troy for the final four outs.
