The Trojans beat the Golden Bears for the second time in less than a week
BERKELEY, Calif. — No. 22 USC men's tennis secured a hard-fought 4–3 victory over No. 23 California on Saturday morning at the Hellman Tennis Complex, closing out a ranked road win in a tightly contested rematch between the two programs.
The Trojans opened the match by claiming the doubles point, with wins on courts three and one. Max Exsted and Nathan Trouve struck first with a 6–3 victory over Alex Aney and Leonardo Cattaneo on court three, before Andrin Casanova and Jack McCarthy clinched the point with a 6–4 win over No. 55-ranked Timofey Stepanov and Tiago Silva at the top spot.
USC carried that momentum into singles play as Branko Djuric extended the Trojans' lead to 2–0, dominating Tiago Silva on court one, 6–2, 6–2. Shortly after, Max Exsted delivered another decisive performance on court four, rolling past Andrea Meduri, 6–0, 6–3, to put USC within one point of clinching the dual.
California responded with wins on courts three and five to keep the match alive, as Stepanov defeated McCarthy and Bernardo Munk Mesa topped Niels Hoffman. The Golden Bears then evened the score at 3–3 when Filip Lechno-Wasiutyski edged Trouve in a three-set battle on court two, 7–5, 4–6, 7–6 (7–3).
With the match on the line, Casanova delivered the deciding point for USC on court six. After splitting the first two sets, the sophomore regrouped to defeat Lenn Luemkemann, 6–3, 4–6, 6–3, sealing USC's 4–3 victory after just over three hours of play.
The win marks USC's second ranked victory of the season and improves the Trojans' overall record to 4-2 as they continue their Bay Area road swing tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. PT against Stanford.
