No. 25 USC Men’s Golf Through First Round of The Desimone Invitational

DALY CITY, Calif. — The No. 25 USC men's golf team is currently in 11th place out of 15 teams after two rounds of play at The Desimone Invitational, hosted by the University of California at Lake Merced Golf Club on Monday, March 9.
On a day that saw 13 of the 15 teams in the field finish below par, the Trojans moved up to the top five at the turn of the first round and rose up to third during the second round of the par-72, 6,915-yard Lake Merced Golf Course. However, they ended the day in 11th, albeit four strokes outside the top five.
Arizona State is currently in the lead with a 547 (-29), while TCU (554, -22), SMU (556, -20), Washington State (559, -17) and UCLA (561, -15) round out the top five. Pongsapak Laopakdee of Arizona State is the top individual so far with a 131 (-13).
Senior Antonio Safa leads the Trojans in a tie for 14th place with a 139 (-5). The only Trojan with both rounds under par, Safa began the day with a 71 (-1) that had five birdies and four bogeys before firing a 68 in the second round. Safa started strong with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 8-9 before finishing the front side with three more birdies. He ran into trouble only with a double-bogey on the par-4 No. 6; all told, he had six birdies and one double-bogey in his second round.
Sophomore Jack Buchanan sits in a tie for 19th with a 140 (-4). After recording one bogey and one birdie to stay at par in the first round, Buchanan's second round was more memorable. Afte starting the round with a bogey on No. 7, he had three birdies in the first five holes before having his first-ever collegiate ace on the par-3, 149-yard No. 13. Later on the front side, he recorded his second eagle of the day on the par-5 No. 18. All told, his 68 (-4) in the second round had four birdies, two eagles and four bogeys.
Playing in his first stroke-play tournament of the spring, Raghav Gulati is tied for 45th with a 144 (E). He finished with five birdies total after Monday's action.
Junior Nicolas Dominguez rounds out the scorers in a tie for 52nd place with a 145 (+1), while graduate senior Luke Stock is in a tie for 59th with a 146 (+2).
