USC Baseball Wins Battle of LA With 11-5 Victory Over No. 14 UCLA
May 04, 2025 | Baseball
USC scored in each of the final five innings of the game, hitting four homers and getting a clutch relief performance from Andrew Johnson. The Trojans move to 32-15 overall and 16-8 in Big Ten play with the win. UCLA falls to 34-13, 17-7. USC's run of eight straight series wins is the program's longest such streak since 1978. The series victory over the Bruins is the second in three years under Head Coach Andy Stankiewicz.
The Bruins held the advantage through the first three and a half innings after Roman Martin hit a three-run homer in the top of the first, but the Trojans evened things up in the bottom of the fourth, getting back-to-back homers from Andrew Lamb and Jack Basseer. Lamb hit a two-run homer that snuck over the fence in the left field corner and Basseer followed with a solo-shot that went out to deep left center.
The USC offense was far from done as the Trojans poured on four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Lamb was back at it with an RBI double down the line to again spark the rally in the fifth, and then Augie Lopez hit a three-run double to cap it. Adrian Lopez would plate two runs with a double in the sixth.
Augie continued his scorching hot day with a solo homer in the seventh to give the Trojans a 10-5 lead. Ethan Hedges capped the scoring with a solo-homer in the bottom of the eighth. Augie and Hedges each had three hits on the day, with Augie driving in a team-high four runs.
Johnson was the hero on the mound for USC, entering the game with one out in the first inning and the Trojans already down by three. He proceeded to throw 6.1 innings without allowing an earned run or a walk, giving up just four hits while striking out five batters.
Johnson got a strikeout and groundout to end the first and then faced one over the minimum through the next five innings. After an error extended the inning, Johnson exited the game with two outs and two on in the seventh. The two unearned runs would score, but Grant Govel settled in after that and ended the inning with a popup.
Govel brought it home from there, working scoreless eighth and ninth innings to seal the victory. Govel struck out four batters and walked none.
