SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 25 USC baseball team scored two in the eighth to pull within one run, but couldn't come all the way back on the road at UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday night, falling 3-2 to the Gauchos.
USC falls to 32-16 on the season while UCSB improves to 31-16.
The Gauchos put up three runs in the second inning to take the early lead and the UCSB bullpen kept USC in check all the way until the eighth.
Maximo Martinez started the rally with a pinch-hit single to lead things off, and Brayden Dowd later followed with a single to center field. After a groundout advanced Martinez to third, Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek singled him home. Adrian Lopez drew a walk to load the bases and Andrew Lamb reached on an infield single to score the second run of the inning.
UCSB loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but Sax Matson came in to get a strikeout and popup to end the inning and strand all three runners.
Abbrie Covarrubias led the ninth off with a bunt single, but that was it for the Trojan rally as he was left stranded.

The Trojans host Michigan State for their final home series of the season starting on Friday. All three games against the Spartans will be on B1G+.
