IRVINE, Calif. – The USC baseball team loaded the bases and scored a run in the ninth, but couldn't complete the comeback against No. 14 UCLA on Friday night in Irvine, falling 7-6 to the Bruins.

The Trojans scored in both the seventh and ninth innings to make it a one-run game, but left runners on in both frames to come up short. USC falls to 30-15 overall on the season and 14-8 in Big Ten play with the loss. UCLA moves to 34-11, 17-5.

The Trojans had the bases loaded in the seventh and got an RBI groundout from Abbrie Covarrubias, but left runners on second and third to end the inning. Adrian Lopez doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth and later scored on a single up the middle from Jack Basseer to make it a 7-6 game. Augie Lopez and Kade Higgins each drew pinch-hit walks to load the bases with two outs, but a strikeout ended the game.

The Bruins put up single runs in each of the first two innings, but USC got a two-run double off the wall from Adrian Lopez to tie things up in the bottom of the third. UCLA had an answer in the fourth, scoring four runs on three hits to take a 6-2 lead.

Ethan Hedges pulled a pair back for the Trojans in the bottom of the fourth, singling through the right side with two outs to score Maximo Martinez and Basseer. After both bullpens put up zeroes in the next two innings, AJ Salgado singled home a run for the Bruins to make it 7-4 in favor of the visitors.

After the Trojans fell behind 6-2, Grant Govel took over on the mound and gave up just one run on two hits through 3.0 innings of work. Sax Matson got the final out of the seventh and Andrew Harbour tossed a scoreless eighth, followed by Jude Favela with a scoreless ninth.
