USC Rowing Sees Successes On Day One At Big Ten Invitational

Trojans had strong showings with several top finishes out in Sarasota, Fla.
SARASOTA, FLA. — The USC women's rowing team showed strength down the line in a busy day of the Trojans' first competition at the Big Ten Invitational. USC had six boats in action across two rounds of racing out at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla., with three boats winning their respective races in afternoon rounds.
Conditions and competition shifted throughout the day as USC's boats battled it out with teams from the Big Ten, ACC, SEC and beyond. Full results and lineups from today's morning and afternoon rounds are below. Here's a look at how each race took shape for the Trojans:
2V4+
First Round:Â A frontrunner early, USC saw three boats break away from the pack but maintained course to take fourth, six seconds ahead of the fifth-place finisher.
Second Round: USC was in contention for the lead early, moving up four seats and then getting out to almost a boatlength  advantage midway through then race. The Trojans had open water with 500 to go and held strong to finish first.
1V4+
First Round:Â Up against several strong boats, USC worked to create space and settle into a rhythm, finishing fourth in the morning round four second behind the third-place boat and five seconds up on the fifth-place finisher.
Second Round:Â It was a tight race for second place entering the final 300, but USC dug in for the final stretch and hit the finish line almost two seconds ahead of the third-place boat to take second.
2V8+
First Round:Â USC was neck-and-neck in this one, getting four seats up and then taking third place by just over a second ahead of the four-place boat it had been battling with throughout.
Second Round:Â In what turned out to be one of the tightest races of the day, USC had early ground to make up but ended up joining the pack with all boats in contact. Up two seats in the final 500, the Trojans took the first-place finish by just over a second's margin.
1V8+
First Round:Â In another speedy first-round race, USC made a move to close and pass and get into fourth place. The Trojans continued to push, finishing in fourth just a half-second behind the third-place boat.
Second Round:Â USC was one of three boats in a tight race for second place in the final event of the day, with the Trojans taking third to edge out fourth-place Clemson and cross the line just behind second-place Michigan State.
3V4+
First Round:Â USC was in a close running for second place midway through in its morning race, finishing third after the second-place finisher made a move to get space on the Trojans.Â
Second Round:Â Four hours later, USC was back on the water and wound up in fourth place.
3V8+
First Round:Â The race for second place tightened up between three boats as this morning's race unfurled. USC was five seats behind before making a late push to claim a third-place finish by just over a half-second.
Second Round:Â After a few hours' break, the Trojans turned back around and hit the water for a six-boat race that they would cruise through, getting out ahead and staying the course to tally USC's first first-place finish of the day.
