USC Baseball Evens Series With 6-3 Win at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – Caden Aoki tossed seven strong innings and the USC baseball team scored six runs on 13 hits as the Trojans evened their series at Penn State with a 6-3 win on Saturday night in State College.
Aoki held the Nittany Lions hitless until the fifth inning as the Trojans built an early lead, with USC improving to 22-12 overall with and 10-7 in Big Ten play with the win. Penn State falls to 22-11, 10-7.
USC scored in three of the first five innings to build up an early 5-0 advantage. Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek drove in a run in the third to open the scoring, then after Abbrie Covarrubias led off the fourth with a double, Augie Lopez and Brayden Dowd added RBI singles to make it a three-run USC lead.
The Trojans loaded the bases in the fifth and Dean Carpentier worked a walk and Kade Higgins hit a sac fly to make it a 5-0 game. USC would add one more run in the seventh on a Penn State error.
Aoki didn't allow a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning, but Penn State would break through for three hits and two runs in the frame. Aoki limited the damage, getting a strikeout to end the inning and strand two runners.
The Trojan righty settled right back in after the fifth, retiring six of the next seven batters to work scoreless sixth and seventh innings before his day was done. The three hits and two runs in the fifth were the only allowed by Aoki in the game as he struck out six batters through seven innings.
Andrew Johnson picked up the save, giving up one run in his 2.0 innings of work.
