Ashley Erasmus was named Women's Field Athlete of the Week and Freshman of the Week, Racquil Broderick Men's Field Athlete of the Week, Christine M. Mallard Women's Track Athlete of the Week and Yougendy Mauricette Men's Track Athlete of the Week in the Big Ten for the week of March 19-26, it was announced by the conference office today (March 26). Â
Freshman Ashley Erasmus set the USC women's shot put record with a mark of 58-5.75 (17.82m), tops among NCAA throwers. With her second collegiate outdoor throw she set the USC freshman record, then with her third attempt broke the school record with her winning mark at the Trojan Invitational on March 22. Erasmus' mark ranks fifth in the world and she is at least six years younger than the four throwers ahead of her on the global list. The Mbombela, South Africa native also placed second by an inch in the women's discus throw at the Trojan Invitational on March 21 with a mark of 173-11 (53.01m) which moved her to eighth on USC's all-time list. It also ranks 21st in the country, third among all freshman and third among Big Ten throwers.
Sophomore Racquil Broderick broke the longest-standing USC men's track and field record with a PR of 207-0 (63.09m) in the discus throw to win at the Trojan Invitational on March 21. He broke school record of 206-0 (62.78m) which had stood for 58 years (since. 1967). His winning throw came in his first throw of his first competition this season, with the former Trojan record-holder Gary Carlsen in attendance. All five of Broderick's legal throws would have scored at least third at the 2024 NCAA Championships, a meet in which he placed second in as a freshman. The Port Maria, Jamaica native currently ranks second among collegians and 16th in the world in the discus throw.
