USC Baseball Takes Series With 7-1 Win Over Nebraska

IRVINE, Calif. – The USC baseball team won its second straight Big Ten series on Sunday, taking down Nebraska 7-1 to end the weekend winning two-of-three from the Cornhuskers.

Freshman Grant Govel tossed five scoreless innings and USC hit three homers as the Trojans were in control from start to finish in the series finale. USC improves to 13-9 overall and 4-5 in Big Ten play. Nebraska falls to 10-13, 2-7.

USC scored in each of the first two innings, getting an RBI single from Ethan Hedges in the first and an RBI double by Maddox Riske in the second. Richard Tejeda drove in two runs on a single to center field in the fourth to give the Trojans a 4-0 lead.

The USC advantage would go to 7-0 after back-to-back home runs from Maximo Martinez and Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek in the sixth, and a solo-homer from Adrian Lopez in the seventh.

Nebraska got one run on a sac fly in the top of the eighth, but that was it for the visiting Huskers. Govel scattered four hits through his 5.0 scoreless innings to start the game and then handed it off to Sax Matson for a scoreless sixth. Dylan Osborne and Brodie Purcell combined to pitch the seventh and eighth, and Michael Ebner worked the ninth.

The USC pitching staff did not walk a batter in the game. The Trojans offense posted its seven runs on 11 hits, getting two-hit days from Lopez, Martin-Grudzielanek and Martinez.

COMING UP
The Trojans are home against UC Irvine on Tuesday at LMU and then USC hits the road against Indiana next weekend. Tuesday's game and the first two at Indiana will be broadcast on B1G+, with Sunday's finale against the Hoosiers on the Big Ten Network.
