Trojans claim 800y freestyle relay in school record time of 6:10.85.
MINNEAPOLIS – USC won its first ever Big Ten relay title to kick off the 2025 conference swimming and diving championships on Wednesday evening at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
The Trojans claimed the 800y freestyle relay in a school record time of 6:10.85. Luke Maurer led off the race with a time of 1:33.07, followed by Oliver Sogaard-Andersen's 1:31.97. Ben Dillard then clocked a time of 1:34.01 before Krzysztof Chmielewski anchored the relay with a swift 1:31.80 split to secure the win.
The quartet blasted a school record worthy time of 6:10.85 to secure an NCAA automatic invite in the event. Trojans Dylan Carter, Patrick Mulcare, Reed Malone and Santo Condorelli set the USC record back in 2017 when the relay posted a 6:10.97.
Tonight's relay win marked the first conference relay victory for the Trojans since 2018 (Pac-12 title in the 400y free relay – Condorelli, Carter, Tribuntsov and Nguyen) and the first conference title in the 800y freestyle relay since 2015 (Tribuntsov, A. Malone, Condorelli and Quintero).
USC's 200y medley relay quartet comprised of Griffin O'Leary, Chris O'Grady, Michal Chmielewski and Diggory Dillingham finished sixth in 1:23.97. The squad later returned to time trial the race and lower their time to 1:23.85 to earn an NCAA B cut in the event.
Through the first evening of competition, USC sits in second place with 112 points. Indiana leads the way with 116 total points.
Action continues tomorrow at 10 a.m. CST/8 a.m. PST with the first preliminary session of swimming (500y freestyle, 200y IM, 50y freestyle). One-meter diving prelims will begin at approximately 12 p.m. CST/10 a.m. PST.
