No. 1 USC Beach Volleyball Falls to No. 7 LMU on Queen’s Beach
February 20, 2025 | Women's Beach Volleyball
The Trojans suffer their first loss of the season and the first loss to the Lions in 32 meetings
HONOLULU – The No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team (1-1) fell to No. 7 Loyola Marymount (2-0), 4-1, in its second match at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic on Queen's Beach on Thursday, Feb. 20.
While it is the first loss of the season for the Trojans, it snaps a seven-dual win streak that dated back to the end of the 2024 season. It is also USC's first loss to LMU in the 32-dual history of the head-to-head series. The Trojans fall to 31-1 against the Lions and go to 28-5 all-time in the state of Hawai'i. USC also falls to 156-19 when ranked No. 1 in the AVCA poll.
USC scored its only point from the No. 4 position in the only match to go three sets. There, sophomore Madison Goellner and graduate Ella Larkin battled it out for a 17-21, 21-16, 15-8 win over Magdalena Rabitsch and Isabelle Reffel. LMU won first sets across all five courts, but Goellner-Larkin prevented a full Lion sweep with their comeback victory.
The Lions took straight-set wins for each of their points and got started at the No. 3 position where Lisa Luini and Abbey Thorup took down freshman Kennedy Coakley and sophomore Ashley Pater, 21-19, 21-16. At the top spot, Vilhelmiina Prihti and Michelle Shaffer put up a second LMU point with a 21-15, 21-17 result over Trojan juniors Mabyn Thomas and Madison White.
Moments later, the Lions sealed their first-ever win over the Women of Troy with a victory from court five where Giuliana Poletti Corrales and Tanon Rosenthal collected a 21-16, 22-20 win against junior Delaney Karl and sophomore Kaileigh Truslow. LMU posted its fourth point with a win at court two when Chloe Hooker and Anna Pelloia took down graduate Maya Gessner and sophomore Zoey Henson, 21-19, 21-15.
USC will play four more ranked foes at the Duke Kahanamoku Classic. Up next, the Trojans face No. 5 Stanford (0-2) and No. 11 Arizona State (1-1) on Friday (Feb. 21). They then meet No. 3 UCLA (2-0) and No. 2 TCU (1-1) on Saturday (Feb. 22).
