No. 1 USC Beach Volleyball Splits Second Day in Honolulu

The Trojans were narrowly defeated by No. 5 Stanford but bounced back to sweep No. 11 Arizona State
HONOLULU – The No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team (2-2) was defeated by No. 5 Stanford (1-2) in a narrow 3-2 dual but bounced back to complete a 5-0 sweep of No. 11 Arizona State (1-2) to end its second day at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic with a split on Queen's Beach, Friday, Feb. 21.
The Women of Troy fell to 15-2 all-time against Stanford but will meet the Cardinal three more times in the regular season. Both times the Trojans have lost to Stanford have been on Queen's Beach sand. USC improved to 17-0 against the Sun Devils and are not scheduled to face ASU again this spring. The Trojans moved to 29-6 all-time in the state of Hawai'i and to 157-20 when ranked No. 1 in the AVCA poll.
USC scored its two points against the Cardinal from the Nos. two and five positions, but the wins came after Stanford had already clinched the dual with wins at the other locations. Four matches went to three sets in the back-and-forth battle.
At two, freshman Kennedy Coakley and junior Mabyn Thomas took a 21-12, 26-28, 15-12 win over Charlotta Bell and Taylor Wilson. Junior Delaney Karl and sophomore Kaileigh Truslow came back to take a 14-21, 21-16, 15-10 win over Emma Morris and Ashley Vincent at five.
Stanford's first point came from the No. 4 position when Clara Stowell and Chloe Hoffman defeated junior Madison Goellner and graduate Ella Larkin, 21-19, 21-10. The Cardinal moved ahead, 2-0, when Avery Jackson and Kelly Belardi scored a 21-15, 10-21, 19-17 win over graduate Maya Gessner and sophomore Ashley Pater. Stanford clinched the dual with a three-set win at the top court where Brooke Rockwell and Ruby Sorra defeated junior Madison White and sophomore Zoey Henson in three sets, 18-21, 21-18, 21-19.
Against the Sun Devils, USC secured its first 5-0 sweep of the season (155th all-time) with straight-set wins on all courts. At court three, Gessner-Pater finished first with a 21-13, 21-14 win over Tori Clement and former Trojan Ava Kirunchyk. Goellner and Larkin put up a second point with a 21-17, 21-18 win at the No. 4 spot over Arden Bensecker and Ava Haughy. The dual went into the books as a USC win when Karl-Truslow racked up a 21-18, 21-16 win over Zoe Taylor and Kendall Whitmarsh at the No. 5 position.
USC tacked up its fourth point of the dual from the No. 1 position when Henson-White knocked off Daniella Kensinger and Ava Williamson, 27-25, 21-14. The sweep was sealed on a 21-17, 22-20 win by Coakley-Thomas over Olivia McElroy and Anya Pemberton at two.
USC will conclude the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Classic with a pair of Saturday duals. The Trojans take on No. 3-ranked crosstown rival UCLA (4-0) and No. 2 TCU (1-2) in matches set to begin at 3:30 p.m. PT and 6 p.m. PT respectively.
